Connecting with God through music

Eric left a great post to my previous entry, it got me thinking, what songs and pieces of music have connected me to God or generally mean a lot to me.

No woman no cry: Bob Marley

Remember being out of my head on drugs feeling desperate sitting in a pub and the refrain of "everythings gonna be all right" pushing through the haze like the very voice of God.

Toccato: Johann Sebastian Bach

Had to write a play to this in junior school, felt awe struck by the creativity that God could put into man. Also a very good piece of organ music.

Prayers of the saints: Matt Redman

Love it, it helps me pray, especially using josh sticks. I probaly over use it in our prayer room.

Romeo and Juliet: Dire Straits

"Can't do the talk like the talk on the TV, can't do a love song the way it's meant to be. Can't do everything but I'd do anything for you, can't do anything except be in love with you." First message I ever put into a valentines card for my wife, I still mean it today.

Obsession: Delirious

Loved it, heard it at cutting edge in the 90's it changed me. Spoke at a cutting edge event in Southampton once whilst the band played the base line in the background, enjoyed the buzz.

Wild thing: The Troggs

Sang this to my wife at our wedding reception in front of over 200 people, also symbolic of the Holy Spirit. Wild thing you make my heart sing = the Holy Spirit makes my heart sing and Shes wild.

Hallelujah: Jeff Buckley

From his album grace, originally by Leonard Cohen, weird at points but haunting. Has grace written all over it.

Coney Island Baby: Lou Reed

Speaks of living to please others it just challenges me on why I do what I do.

There is a Redeemer: Kieth Green

When I re-connected with God this song really helped me, I had it played at my baptism.

All the along the watchtower: Jimi Hendrix

Great for intercession, also it was written by Bob Dylan who I love.

Innocent man: Billy Joel

Used to sing this in prison, it wasn't true but made me feel better. Also sung it after my girl friend caught me kissing her best friend, it didn't help, but again made me feel better.

Forever in Blue Jeans: Neil Diamond

Shared a cell with a guy who loved Neil Diasmond he used to sing this to me a lot, his co defendant had got let off because his dad was a rich judge!

Fix you: Cold Play

For some reason this song can make me cry, it's like God speaking to me. Would be good at my funeral; pick the coffin up and carry me out just as the guitar rift starts.

Bad: U2

Live Aid 1986, need I say more.

Be Thou my Vision: Celtic Version

Riches I need not, nor mans empty praise, Thou my inheritance now and always. Perspective comes with this song.

As you may have gathered I also like Queen.

This is great. Makes me want to go and think about the same sort of thing. I remember you singing Wild Thing for us at your wedding reception.

This list is fantastic. Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" is one of my favorites, too, but I've also always found some parts a little weird. Wish he didn't swim away to die, that guy.
